Chihuahua puppies
Chihuahuas are tiny, devoted and often more strong-minded than their size suggests. Most form intense attachments to one or two people and do best in calm, predictable households. Grooming needs are the lowest of any breed Precious Pups places, but their fragility asks for real care.

What draws families to the Chihuahua
Three things families mention most when they ask about this breed.
Weekly brushing is generally enough for either coat type - the lightest routine we place.
Most bond closely with one or two people and are content in a settled routine.
Well suited to apartments and easy to travel with, provided the household is careful.

Is a Chihuahua right for your household?
The Chihuahua is the smallest breed we place, commonly two to six pounds fully grown. That one fact shapes everything else. Many are bold, alert and deeply loyal, often bonding hard with one or two people and remaining reserved with everyone else.
They're not timid dogs by nature, but they're physically delicate, and a household that can't reliably keep a two-pound puppy from being stepped on or dropped isn't the right home. Exercise needs are minimal and easily met indoors. Coats come smooth or long; either is straightforward, needing only weekly brushing. Many dislike cold and will seek out warmth, which is at least one thing the Panhandle climate makes easy.
Temperament & fit
Most Chihuahuas are confident, watchful and devoted to their chosen people. Many are wary of strangers and can be vocal about it, which early socialization helps considerably. They often prefer the company of their own household to a busy social life, and tend to be happiest in a settled routine.
Grooming & care
The lightest grooming load of any breed here. Weekly brushing suits both the smooth and long coats, with a little more attention to the long variety. Dental care is the real priority: very small mouths are prone to crowding and tartar, so building a brushing habit early is worth the effort. Nails need regular trimming.
What to expect once your puppy is home
Safety and socialization are the two themes of the early weeks. A puppy this small needs a household that's genuinely careful about doorways, chairs, stairs and feet, and a defined safe space of its own to retreat to. On the social side, gentle and unremarkable exposure to visitors, sounds and handling while your puppy is young tends to prevent the wariness the breed is known for from hardening.
Start dental care now - a Chihuahua that accepts having its teeth brushed at four months is far easier at four years. Keep your puppy warm; many actively dislike cool rooms and drafts. Any concern about health, teeth or appetite should go to your own veterinarian.

Chihuahua questions families ask
Still weighing breeds? Our guide to choosing a small breed for your family works through the questions that decide it. More general answers are on the FAQ page.

Usually only with older, gentle children. At two to six pounds an adult Chihuahua is very easily hurt, and many don't tolerate unpredictable handling well. For families with toddlers, a Shih Tzu or Pug is a more realistic direction.
Very little - weekly brushing for either the smooth or long coat. The exception is dental care, which matters more in this breed than in most because small mouths crowd easily.
Not very. Indoor play and short walks are generally enough. They're one of the easiest breeds we place for owners with limited mobility or a quiet routine.
Typically two to six pounds. This is the smallest breed on the site, and it's worth planning your home around rather than treating as a detail.
Not inherently. Many are wary of strangers, and a wary small dog that feels cornered may snap. Calm early socialization and a household that lets the dog approach on its own terms make a considerable difference.
