Maltese puppies
The Maltese is a long-established companion breed: small, gentle and strongly people-oriented. Most are content in calm homes where someone is usually around, and the white single coat is low-shedding but genuinely high-maintenance. Precious Pups places Maltese puppies with Panhandle families who want a close companion rather than an outdoor dog.

What draws families to the Maltese
Three things families mention most when they ask about this breed.
Typically softer in manner than terrier types, which suits calmer households well.
A single fine coat drops minimal hair, though it needs daily brushing in return.
Small enough to travel easily and to live comfortably in an apartment.

Is a Maltese right for your household?
Maltese are among the gentlest small breeds we work with. Many are affectionate without being demanding, happy to sit alongside you for long stretches, and noticeably softer in manner than a terrier cross. Adults are genuinely tiny, with four to seven pounds being typical, and that shapes almost everything about their care, from how they're handled to how much heat and rough play they can tolerate.
Exercise needs are modest and easily met indoors and on short walks. The coat is a single layer of long, fine white hair that sheds very little but mats readily and shows staining around the eyes and mouth, so daily attention is part of the deal rather than an optional extra.
Temperament & fit
Most Maltese are people-oriented to a marked degree and form close attachments quickly. They tend to be sociable with visitors once introduced and are usually less territorial than some toy breeds. Many find long periods alone genuinely difficult, which is worth weighing honestly before deciding.
Grooming & care
Daily brushing is the realistic expectation for a coat kept long, along with regular attention around the eyes where tear staining is common. Many families choose a short puppy cut, which cuts the daily work substantially and suits the Florida climate. A trim every four to six weeks keeps either style tidy, and dental care matters in a mouth this small.
What to expect once your puppy is home
Coat care sets the rhythm of the first weeks. Handling the coat, face and feet daily while your puppy is small makes grooming a non-event later, and it's much harder to introduce at a year old. Keep play gentle and discourage jumping from furniture - a fall that a larger dog would shrug off can injure a dog this size.
House training usually progresses well on a frequent, predictable schedule. Because Maltese attach so quickly, it's worth teaching your puppy early that being briefly alone is normal, in short and unremarkable stretches, rather than avoiding it entirely. Anything that worries you about your puppy's health should go to your own veterinarian.

Maltese questions families ask
Still weighing breeds? Our guide to choosing a small breed for your family works through the questions that decide it. More general answers are on the FAQ page.

It depends on the children's ages. Many Maltese are lovely with gentle, older children. With toddlers the concern is physical: an adult may weigh five pounds, and ordinary rough-and-tumble can cause real injury.
Daily brushing if the coat is kept long, plus a trim every four to six weeks. A short puppy cut is a practical alternative that many Panhandle families prefer, particularly through the summer.
Often less well than other breeds we place. Many form close attachments and find long stretches alone difficult. If the house is empty for most of the working day, another breed may suit you better.
Typically four to seven pounds. This is one of the smallest breeds we place, and that size is worth planning around rather than treating as a detail.
Tear staining is common on a white coat and is usually a cosmetic matter of routine cleaning. If it changes suddenly, looks sore, or comes with discharge, that's a question for your veterinarian rather than something to manage at home.
