Shih Tzu puppies

Shih Tzus are steady, sociable dogs that tend to take life as it comes. Many settle just as well with children in the house as in a quieter home, and the long double coat is the main commitment. Their shortened muzzle also makes heat management a real consideration in the Florida Panhandle.

Why families consider this breed

What draws families to the Shih Tzu

Three things families mention most when they ask about this breed.

Adaptable nature

Often comfortable in most household types, first-time owners included.

Sturdier build

At nine to sixteen pounds, more robust than the very smallest breeds we place.

Low-shedding coat

Drops little hair, in exchange for daily brushing or a shorter practical cut.

Household fit

Is a Shih Tzu right for your household?

Of the breeds Precious Pups places, the Shih Tzu is often the most adaptable. Many are relaxed, friendly with people of all ages, and less inclined to the sharp alertness of the terrier crosses. Adults commonly weigh nine to sixteen pounds, which makes them sturdier than a Maltese or Chihuahua and a little more forgiving of family life.

Exercise needs are modest; most are satisfied by short walks and indoor play, and few are enthusiastic athletes. Two things deserve honest attention. The coat is a long double coat that mats quickly without daily brushing. And the breed's shortened muzzle means many Shih Tzus tolerate heat and humidity poorly, which matters more here than it would further north.

Household type One of the more flexible breeds here. Often works well for families, couples, first-time owners and quieter homes alike.
Children and other pets Generally good with children who have learned to be gentle, and sturdier than the very small breeds. Most are relaxed about other dogs and cats after a calm introduction.
Space and exercise Comfortable in apartments and smaller homes. Short daily walks usually suffice, ideally in the cooler parts of the day.
Heat and climate Worth planning for. Many Shih Tzus struggle in high heat and humidity, so exercise timing, shade and indoor cooling matter through a Florida summer.

Temperament & fit

Most Shih Tzus are easygoing and sociable, often comfortable with new people and unfazed by household activity. They're typically less vocal than the terrier crosses. Many have a stubborn streak that shows up in house training, which patience and a consistent schedule usually resolve.

Grooming & care

A long coat needs brushing daily and a trim every four to six weeks. Many families choose a shorter cut, which is both easier and considerably kinder in a Panhandle summer. Facial folds and the area around the eyes benefit from gentle regular cleaning, and ears should be checked routinely.

The first few weeks

What to expect once your puppy is home

Two routines are worth setting up right away: coat care and sensible heat habits. Brief daily brushing while your puppy is young turns grooming into something ordinary rather than a struggle, and walking early or late rather than in the middle of the day builds a habit you will keep for the dog's life.

House training can take a little longer with this breed than with the Poodle crosses, and a frequent, predictable schedule works far better than correction. Settle your puppy with a consistent sleeping spot and quiet periods during the day. If your puppy seems to be breathing hard, overheating, or is off its food, contact your own veterinarian rather than waiting.

How rehoming works

Rehoming a Shih Tzu, step by step

Never rushed. Most families spend a few weeks between the first conversation and welcoming a puppy home, and that is the pace we plan for.

01

Ask about the Shih Tzu

Tell us the breed you have in mind, or describe what you are looking for. There is no cost to a conversation.

02

Discuss household fit

Children, other pets, the hours the house is empty, and the grooming you can realistically keep up with.

03

Review availability

If a suitable puppy is ready we say so. If not, the free rehoming waitlist holds your place at no cost.

04

Meet the puppy

Every family meets their puppy at the PCB Market stall before anything is decided.

05

Welcome your puppy home

A placement fee applies once a specific puppy is confirmed for your family, and we stay reachable after.

The full process is set out step by step, and the placement policy covers fees and paperwork.

Family discussing puppy rehoming and care

Many are, and their sturdier build helps. As with any dog, the household still needs to teach children how to handle a small dog calmly, and to supervise early on while everyone learns each other.

Daily brushing for a long coat, with a trim every four to six weeks. A shorter cut is a genuinely sensible option in this climate and cuts the daily work down considerably.

Often not especially well. The shortened muzzle makes cooling harder, so walks are better early or late in the day, with shade and indoor cooling available. If your dog is breathing heavily or seems distressed in heat, treat it as urgent and call your veterinarian.

Commonly nine to sixteen pounds. That range makes them one of the more solidly built small breeds we place, which is part of why they often suit households with younger children better than a four-pound dog would. Adult size varies within a litter, so treat the range as a guide rather than a promise.

Some take longer than average. A frequent, predictable schedule and consistent responses from everyone in the household make more difference than anything else.
